The Jacksonville Insider!
Incoming Corps Member Blast,November 22nd, 2016
The Jacksonville staff would like to wish you a happy holiday season! We hope that you are spending time with family and friends, and staying warm!
Our teachers are enjoying their last day before Thanksgiving break! This time next year, YOU WILL BE DOING THE SAME!!!
Please read through this entire email. The information included is time sensitive and important.
My name is Kayla Hardimon. I will be your primary source of contact from now until when you arrive here in Jacksonville!
We call the path between the day you are accepted into Teach For America and the day you actually arrive in Jacksonville for Induction "matriculation". Throughout matriculation, we aim to get to know you as much as possible, to serve you and your needs, and to push you to truly prepare to be the best Teacher Leader possible for our wonderful students here in Jax.
What to Expect From Us
Communication on Jax Corps within 72 Hours. If you submit items via email, your confirmation that we have received it will be the automatic response that you get! If there are follow-up actions, or questions in your email to us, we will be sure to get back to you in a timely fashion. If at anytime you do not receive a response from jaxcorps, please reach out to Kayla.Hardimon@teachforamerica.org
What We Need From You
We ask that you do the following things in order to help us get to know you better, and guide you in your process in transitioning to Jacksonville.
1. Timely communication: Respond to emails within 48 hours.
On the logistical side, failing to respond to emails may hinder our ability to assist you, will likely lead to missed deadlines, and will make your transition to Jacksonville unnecessarily challenging!
We know that CMs who commit early to the transition to Jacksonville have a much easier time. Part of that commitment is in making Jacksonville a part of your daily life NOW! Responding to emails and communication in a timely fashion is a big part of that!!
2. Complete action items: Complete any action items by the deadlines! Similar to timely communication, completing action items is a mandatory part of committing to our work here Jacksonville. Add all action items to your calendar in order to ensure that everything gets done in a timely and efficient manner. The Requirements Timeline will serve as your guide this year, but completing the action items listed in monthly blasts leading up to institute will be vital!
The timeline is below:
2017 Corps Requirements and Expectations Timeline
Attend the MANDATORY CM Expectations Call - December 1st 7:00 pm EST
Note: This call is mandatory for 1/2 DL CMs. If you attended the Expectations call already, please bypass this section! If you are an EDL or Deferral CM and missed the expectations call in September you will need to attend this call.
In order to make sure that 100% of incoming CMs are clear on expectations, we will have a Mandatory Expectations call on December 1st at 7:00pm. This call will answer questions, go over the timeline for the next year, give some tips and tricks for your transition and more!
You will need a computer with audio functions in order to view and hear the entirety of the call. The webex link is below!
Upcoming Regional Action Items
Complete Math or Science Placement Survey
(Math and Science placements ONLY)
Complete Certification Survey (Education majors ONLY)
Complete the Accommodations Request Form
Teach For America strives to offer reasonable accommodations for corps members with disabilities during institute. Please use the form linked below to let us know if you have a disability that will impact your housing, mobility, medically-dictated dietary needs (i.e., diabetes), engagement with instructional materials during institute, etc. Our Disabilities Accommodations Office and summer training staff will follow up with corps members who request an accommodation. Please note that you may need to complete and upload additional medical documentation after you submit your request.
In order to submit an accommodations request, we ask that you complete the Accommodations Request Form by 12/9 so we have ample time to follow up on the accommodation needs you indicate in the survey. While we ask that corps members complete the survey by this deadline, the survey is open to corps members throughout the year in case additional accommodation requests need to be submitted.
Please note: We will collect information about non medically-dictated dietary needs (e.g., halal, kosher, vegan) this spring.
Testing Support Action
Next week you will receive information on how to register for study.com. This is a comprehensive testing support program. It includes hundreds of online lessons pertaining directly to your FTCE exam. Completing at least 80% of this course is mandatory. You will receive information about this course this week!
